abstract A nucleic acid molecule encoding the Abscisic acid responsive element binding factor 1 (ABF1) was isolated and its nucleotide sequence determined. ABF1 belongs to the ABF family of factors which bind abscisic acid responsive elements in plants. Expression of ABFs is inducible by abscisic acid and various stress treatments. ABFs have the potential to activate a large number of abscisic acid/stress responsive genes and thus a nucleic acid molecule encoding ABF1 can be used to generate transgenic plants that are tolerant to multiple environmental stresses.
