abstract A magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic substrate, an intermediate layer containing at least a nonmagnetic powder, and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder, wherein the magnetic layer has an indentation hardness of 0.3 GPa or more, and the surface profile of the magnetic layer satisfies the following conditions (a) to (c): (a) the 10 point height parameter R Z is 100 nm or less; (b) the difference between the maximum peak-to-valley distance PV and R Z (PV-R Z ) is 10 nm or less; and (c) the skewness Rsk is -2 or more and less than 0, has excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and running durability.
