abstract An inventive method and reagent for the colorimetric determination of nickel and cobalt is provided. The method and reagent uses dithiothreitol and a phosphate buffer to quantitatively detect nickel and cobalt at 465 nm and 485 nm, respectively. The method and reagent are accurate over a nickel concentration range of 1.76 to 35.2 ppm, and over a cobalt concentration range of 0.587 to 17.6 ppm. The invention is valid in protein solutions, requires no extractions and uses stable reagents. Common metals found in biological system do not interfere with the method.
