The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composite layer of the polymer dispersion type wherein a liquid crystal material comprising compounds of formulae (1) and (2) is dispersed in a matrix polymer; wherein formula (1) is: <IMAGE> (1) wherein A1 and A2 each represent independently a benzene ring, cyclohexane ring, pyrimidine ring or trans-1,3-dioxane ring; X1, X2, X3, X4, X5 and X6 each independently represent H, F or Cl; Z1 and Z2 each independently represent a single bond, -CH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C 3BOND C-, -COO- or -OCO-; Q represents a single bond, -CH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CF2-, -OCF2, -C2F4-, -CCl2- or -C2Cl4-; Y represents H, F or Cl; R represents CnH2n+1O-, CnH2n+1CH=CH- (n=2-10); m represents 0, 1 or 2; <IMAGE> (2) in which B and C represent respectively CnH2n+1-, CnH2n+1O-, CnH2n+1CH=CH- or CnH2n+1-C6H10- (n=2-10), and L is H or F. |
