abstract Disclosed is a tricyclic compound represented by formula (I): <IMAGE> (I) where X1-X2 represents CH=CH-CH=CH, CH=CH-CH=N or S-CH=CH; Y-Z represents CH2-O or CH2-S; then L-M represents C=CR9 (in which R9 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl) or CH-CR10R11 (in which each of R10 and R11 independently represents hydrogen or lower alkyl); W represents NR4 (in which R4 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl) or O; each of R1, R2 and R3 independently represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen, nitro, amino or mono or di-lower alkyl-substituted amino; R5 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; each of R6, R7 and R8 independently represents hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; provided that when Y-Z represents CH=CH or CH2CH2, then L-M represents C=CR9 (in which R9 has the same meaning as defined above),or CH-CR10aR11a (in which each of R10a and R11a represents lower alkyl of R10 and R11); and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereto. The compound and its salt have an ACAT inhibiting activity and are expected to have preventive and therapeutic effects on hyperlipemia and arteriosclerosis.
