A polynucleotide probe capable of hybridizing to human genomic DNA between the TaqI sites immediately 5' and 3' of the polymorphic leader TaqI site of the human Apo(a) gene, said human genomic DNA being detectable by PCR amplification of the Apo(a) gene using the 5' and 3' primers: 5':5'CCT ATT TGG ATT TTG GAC GC 3'(SEQ ID NO. 1) 3':5'GAT AAC AGA CCA ATA GCT GT 3'. (SEQ ID NO. 2), or a polynucleotide probe capable of hybridizing to human genomic DNA between the TaqI sites immediately 5' and 3' of the polymorphic kringle TaqI site of the human Apo(a) gene, said human genomic DNA being detectable by PCR amplification of the Apo(a) gene using the 5' and 3' primers: 5':5'CTG CAG ACA ACC CCT TAA ACA 3'(SEQ ID NO. 3) 3':5'GGA TCC TTA GAG ATA ACC TGC 3'(SEQ ID NO. 4). The probes can be used for family studies or population studies to ascertain alleles associated with an increased risk of heart disease. |
