abstract A catalyst composition for the condensation of alcohols with amines to produce an enhanced ratio of acyclic polyamines to other reaction products, comprising a reaction product of: (a) high surface area metal oxides or metal oxide precursors, or mixtures thereof, of metals selected from the group consisting of Groups 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the Periodic Table, (b) a phosphorus component, and (c) metal oxides or metal oxide precursors, or mixtures thereof, of metals selected from the group consisting of Groups 1, 2, and 3 of the Periodic Table. Also disclosed are methods for making the catalyst and for using it to manufacture predominantly linear polyamines.
