abstract The present invention provides methods for inhibiting protein kinase C which comprise contacting protein kinase C with an inhibitory amount of a compound having the formula <IMAGE> wherein R1 is C8 through C15 alkyl; R2 is H, C1 through C10 alkyl, or benzyl; R3 is N-heterocyclic, N-alkylheterocyclic, quaternized N-heterocyclic, NR4R5 or N+R4R5R6X-; R4, R5 and R6 are independently C1 through C10 alkyl; n is 2, 3, 4, or 5; and X is an anion. The invention also provides novel compounds having the formula <IMAGE> wherein R1 is C8 through C15 alkyl; R2 is H, C1 through C10 alkyl, or benzyl; R3 is N-heterocyclic, N-alkylheterocyclic or quaternized N-heterocyclic; and n is 2, 3, 4, or 5.
