abstract A liquid crystal racemic mixture is provided represented by the formula [I]: <CHEM> wherein R<1> is a group which contains an asymmetric carbon atom and is an alkyl, alkoxy or halogenated alkyl group, X and Y are each either one of the following groups: -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -COCH2- -CH2CO- and -S-S-, or a single bond, A and B are each a specific bivalent group such as 1,4-phenylene group, Z is a group selected from <CHEM> (wherein R2 is an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or a halogenated alkyl group), and m and n are an integer of 0 to 2 (m and n not being simultaneously 0). Also provided are a liquid crystal composition comprising the racemic mixture and a liquid crystal element comprising a liquid crystal material containing the racemic mixture.
