abstract Compounds of the general formula ##STR1## and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof wherein n n is an integer of from 0 to 6; n Y is CH 2 , O, SO 2 , --CONH--, --NHCO--, or ##STR2## R 1 and R 2 are independently hydrogen, n C 1-8 alkyl, n heterocyclyl C 0-4 alkyl, n aryl C 0-4 alkyl, n amino C 1-4 alkyl, n C 1-4 alkylamino C 1-4 alkyl, or n C 3-8 cycloalkyl n wherein R 1 and R 2 may be unsubstituted or substituted with one or more groups chosen from R 3 , where n R 3 is n hydrogen, n C 1-6 alkyl, n hydroxy C 0-4 alkyl, n carboxy C 0-4 alkyl, n C 1-4 alkyloxy C 0-4 alkyl, n heterocyclyl C 0-4 alkyl, n aryl C 0-4 alkyl, n halogen, or n CF 3 ; n R 4 is n C 1-6 alkyl, n heterocyclyl C 0-4 alkyl, or n aryl C 0-4 alkyl; n R 5 is n hydrogen, n C 1-6 alkyl, n aryl C 0-3 alkyl, or n C 1-6 alkylcarbonyloxymethyl n are used in a method of treating osteoporosis by inhibiting the bone resorption activity of osteoclasts.
