A method for preparing a Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI) from soybeans comprising diluting soybean solubles with water, separating purified soybean solubles from the soluble starting material, diluting the purified solubles with water and then ultrafiltrating to produce a crude BBI concentrate which is diluted with water and then spray dried to produce a BBI concentrate product is provided. In another embodiment of the invention, ultrafiltration is eliminated by starting with soy solubles and applying acetone treatment. BBI concentrate product produced in accordance with the invention is a significantly improved inhibiter of malignant cell transformation and methods for its administration to prevent or inhibit progression of cancer are provided. |
