abstract Methods of ligating, severing and plugging an anatomical tubular structure utilizing an applicator for placing a flexible, resilient ligature or plug in engagement with the anatomical tubular structure. In a method of ligating and severing an anatomical tubular structure, a ligature is applied with the use of forceps movable within a tubular member of the applicator carrying at least one ligature, the forceps is removed from the tubular member, a cutting instrument is inserted through the tubular member and the anatomical tubular structure is cut adjacent the ligature. In a method of ligating an anatomical tubular structure, the anatomical tubular structure is anesthetized with an instrument passing through the tubular member of the applicator prior to placing the ligature in engagement with the anatomical tubular structure. In a method of plugging an anatomical tubular structure, a resilient plug is mounted on an elongate member of the applicator, the distal end of the elongate member is positioned adjacent the anatomical tubular structure using an endoscope and the plug is positioned within the anatomical tubular structure.
