abstract Lower polyhydric alcohols are prepared by catalytic hydrogenolysis of sucrose in an aqueous solution by using a catalyst whose active material essentially consists of from 0 to 100% by weight of cobalt, from 0 to 85% by weight of copper and from 0 to 80% by weight of manganese, the percentages being based on the content of the metals.
