abstract A method and apparatus for altering pathogenic microorganisms and viruses in a bodily fluid. The microorganisms or viruses to be altered are tagged by immunofluorescent antibodies and placed in an illumination area where each of them fluoresces. A portion of the fluorescent radiation is received by an optical amplifier which amplifies the fluorescent radiation and redirects the fluorescent radiation back onto the cell from which it originated. The resonant cavity of the optical amplifier can be either a linear cavity or a ring cavity.
