abstract In a heatable lambda probe, the probe voltage is first measured with the heater switched off and then with the heater switched on. The difference between the two voltages is formed and, when it exceeds a predetermined threshold difference, a shunt signal is output which indicates that the probe is not yet ready for operation. Otherwise, the system is examined for readiness for closed-loop control in the conventional manner.
