abstract The present invention deals with novel quaternary polymeric compounds and their application as softening, anti-tangle, and conditioning agents. The polymers conform to the following structure: <IMAGE> <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> R is selected from CH3-(CH2)b-; CH3-(CH2)c-(CH=CH)-(CH2)d; CH3-(CH2)e-CH(CH3)-(CH2)f-; CH3-(CH2)b-O-R1-(CH2)3-; CH3-(CH2)d-CH(CH3)-(CH2)e-O-R1-(CH2)3- and <IMAGE> R1 is -(CH2CH2-O)x-(CH2CH(CH3)-O)y-(CH2CH2O)z-; x y and z are independently integers from 0 to 20; b,c,d,e are independently integers from 5 to 20; m and n are independently integers from 4 to 20; a is an integer from 2 to 2,000; Y is an anionic counter ion needed for charge balance and is selected from chloride, bromide, sulfate, and phosphate.
