abstract A water-soluble dye, free from cellulose reactive groups, of the formula: ##STR1## wherein each of Ar 1 and Ar 2 , independently, represents an optionally substituted phenyl or naphthyl radical, n each of R 1 and R 4 , independently, represents --OR 5 or --NR 6 R 7 , n R 5 represents hydrogen or alkyl, n R 6 represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or a radical of the formula --(C a H 2a O) m (C b H 2b O) n H, n R 7 represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, a radical fo the formula --(C a H 2a O) m (C b H 2b O) n H or a radical of a mono- or disazo dye, or n R 6 and R 7 together form a morpholine ring, n a and b are different integers from 1 to 8, n m is an integer from 1 to 10, n n is an integer from 0 to 9, n each of R 2 and R 3 , independently, represents hydrogen or alkyl, n M represents hydrogen, ammonium or a monovalent metal, and each of p and q, independently is an integer from 1 to 3. n The dyes are suitable for use in ink jet printing.
