A process for preparing an aqueous dispersion, the process being characterized by comprising the steps of (i) preparing a nonaqueous dispersion of polymer particles by polymerizing a radically polymerizable unsaturated monomer (A) in an organic solvent, in which the polymer particles are insoluble, in the presence of, as a dispersion stabilizer resin, a copolymer which is prepared by copolymerizing an alkoxysilane group-containing vinyl monomer represented by the formula <IMAGE> (I) (wherein A is a group <IMAGE> R1 is a hydrogen atom or methyl group, R2 is a saturated bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R3 and R4 are the same or different and each represent a phenyl group, alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or alkoxy group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, R5 is an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and n is an integer of 1 to 100), a carboxyl group-containing unsaturated monomer and other polymerizable monomer (B) copolymerizable with these monomers; and (ii) converting the nonaqueous dispersion to an aqueous dispersion. |
