abstract | A method of forming a high contrast negative image is disclosed, comprising developing an imagewise exposed substantially surface latent image-type silver halide photographic material in the presence of a hydrazine derivative with a developer, said developer having a pH of 10.5 to 12.3 and containing (1) a developing agent, (2) not less than 0.25 mol/liter of a sulfite, (3) a compound represented by formula (I): Ar-R1)n (I), wherein Ar represents an aryl group, and R1 represents an alkyl group or an alkoxy group and n is an integer of from 1 to 3, and (4) a compound represented by formula (II): R2-SO3M (II), or a compound represented by formula (III): R3-COOM (III), wherein M represents a hydrogen atom, Na, K or NH4, and R2 and R3 each represents an alkyl group having at least 3 carbon atoms, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group. |
