A new optical recording medium is herein disclosed, the recording medium comprising a substrate and an optical recording layer formed thereon comprising a dye represented by the following general formula (I): <IMAGE> (wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 respectively represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a monovalent organic group; A denotes a bivalent organic group which is bonded to the ring through a double bond; and X(-) represents an anionic group and is present in a number required to neutralize existing cationic charges, provided that X(-) may form an intramolecular salt together with either of R1 to R6 and A or that at least one of the following combinations, R2 and R3; R3 and R4; R4 and R5; R5 and R6 may form a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic carbocyclic ring or aromatic heterocyclic ring); and optionally a quencher. The optical recording medium has a high sensitivity, an extremely high stability to long term storage and a low deterioration during recording operation. |
