abstract | In accordance with a novel process, 2-alkoxybenzosulfonamides of formula I ##STR1## wherein R is chloromethyl, methoxymethyl, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or trifluoromethyl, are prepared by reacting a 4-alkoxychlorobenzene of formula II ##STR2## with chlorosulfonic acid ClSO 3 H, converting the resultant sulfonyl chloride of formula III ##STR3## by reaction with ammonia into the sulfonamide of formula IV ##STR4## and hydrogenating said sulfonamide with hydrogen, in the presence of a precious metal catalyst. |
