abstract A substantially homogeneous random vinyl acetate copolymer comprising the following general structure: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl; n R 1 is hydrogen or methyl; n R 2 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 20 alkyl, C 6 -C 20 aryl or C 7 -C 30 alkylaryl; n n is a number from 1-1,000; n y is 50-99.999 mole%; and n z is 0.001-50 mole%. n The vinyl acetate copolymer is hydrolyzed to provide a substantially random homogeneous vinyl alcohol copolymer that can be thermoplastically processed into shaped articles possessing good gas barrier properties.
