abstract A membrane for gas separation which comprises a silylated polyphenylene ether is disclosed. Said silylated polyphenylene ether contains a constituting unit containing an organosilane or siloxane group represented by the following formula in at least a part of the repeating unit thereof: <IMAGE> (I) wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represents a hydrogen atom or a group of the formula -Si(R5)(R6)(R7), wherein R5, R6 and R7 each represents an alkyl group; l and n each represents 0 or an integer from 1 to 3; and m represent an integer of from 1 to 3; with the proviso that R1, R2, R3 and R4 do not simultaneously represent hydrogen atoms.
