Drag reduction with novel hydrocarbon soluble polyampholytes |
abstract |
The present invention relates to a family of novel and efficient drag reduction agents for a variety of organic solutions which comprise a family of polymeric complexes (i.e., polyampholytes) which are terpolymers of styrene/metal styrene sulfonate/n-vinylpyridine (NVP). The metal styrene sulfonate is an anionic monomer, while n-vinylpyridine is a base which becomes chemically coordinated to the metal ion. These styrene-based polyampholytes have approximately 1 to about 50 mole percent of the NVP moiety present within the macromolecular structure. These groups are not necessarily present in an equimolar charge ratio. The excess NVP allows for facile dispensability or solubility of the polyampholytes into the organic liquid. <IMAGE> wherein M is a metal cation selected from the group consisting of Group IA, IIA and IB and IIB of the Periodic Table of Elements; x is 40 to about 98 mole percent; y is about 1 to about 50 mole percent; and z is about 1 to about 50 mole percent; wherein y and z are less than 60 mole percent. |
