abstract Disclosed are novel silylated hydroxyl squaraine compositions, novel deuterated hydroxyl squaraine derivatives, and processes for the preparation thereof. More specifically, there is disclosed a process for the preparation of photoconductive hydroxyl squaraine pigment compositions useful as visible and near infrared photoconductor materials comprising (1) effecting functionalization of the hydroxyl squaraine in an organic solvent system wherein the hydroxyl groups therein are silylated, and (2) subjecting the resulting silylated products to hydrolysis enabling conversion to purified squaraine compositions, or conversion to deuterated hydroxyl squaraine derivatives. The hydroxyl squaraine compositions obtained are useful, for example, as photogenerating pigments in layered imaging members.
