Metal chelates of water soluble copolymers with polyvalent metal ions contain a statistical distribution of 1-86% by weight of structural units of the formula <IMAGE> 9-80% by weight of units of the formula <IMAGE> 5-90% by weight of units of the formula <IMAGE> and up to 30% by weight of one or more units of the formulae <IMAGE> wherein R1 is alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R2 and R5 independently of one another are each hydrogen or methyl; R3 and R4 independently of one another are each hydrogen, methyl or ethyl or together are a trimethylene or pentamethylene; Y is a direct bond, phenylene or a moiety of the formula -CO-NH-C(CH3)2-CH2-; and X(+) is a cation or H(-); and wherein the chelating metal is polyvalent metal cations of the second to eighth main groups and of the second sub-group of the periodic system of the elements, and present in a ratio of 1:1 to 100:1 in terms of equivalents and said copolymers are useful as, inter alia, dyestuff auxiliaries and leather retanning agents. |
