abstract New halogenated ester derivatives and liquid crystal compositions containing the same are provided. The derivatives are expressed by the general formula <IMAGE> wherein X is <IMAGE> <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> R is 1-15C alkyl group or alkoxy group; and Y is carboxyl group. The derivatives are useful as component(s) of liquid crystal compositions which have higher mesomorphic temperature ranges, nevertheless have lower viscosities; and also have lower absolute values of dielectric anisotropy, nevertheless can be driven at lower voltages.
