abstract The catalytic hydrodesulfurization of an organic sulfur compound contained in gasoline is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising catalytic grade alumina and a catalytic component at least one member of which is selected from the group consisting of molybdenum and tungsten. A catalytic promoter may also be present in the catalyst composition with at least one member of the catalytic promoter being selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt and nickel. A suitable nitrogen compound is also contacted with the catalyst composition to at least partially suppress the saturation of olefins in the gasoline during the hydrodesulfurization process.
