abstract Cobalt is recovered by treating aqueous solutions containing ammonia and cobalt ions with a sufficient amount of an acid in the presence of a catalyst to convert the cobalt ions to a cobalt hexammine ion which is precipitated and separated from the resulting solution. According to another aspect of the invention, a cobalt compound is precipitated from an aqueous solution of cobaltic hexammine halide by treating the solution with a metallic hydroxide and the precipitate is subsequently reduced to form fine cobalt powder.
