Synthetic compounds of the formula: ##STR1## are disclosed wherein X is an integer of at least 0 and A and B each represent a divalent moiety of the formula: ##STR2## WHEREIN R 1 and R 5 are each selected from the residue of an amino acid or a polypeptide; R 2 represents the residue of tryptophan or tyrosine; R 3 represents the residue of an amino acid; R 4 represents the residue of lysine; arginine or histidine; a is an integer of 0 to 4, inclusive; b and c are each integers of at least 0; m is an integer of from 0 to 1, inclusive; and n is an integer of at least 1; provided that when R 1 or R 5 is the residue of a polypeptide, the corresponding b or c is 1. n The disclosure is also of intermediate compounds for preparing the compounds of the above formula and derivative compounds having biological activity. n Disclosed also are pharmaceutical compositions wherein the essential active ingredient is a synthetic compound of the invention and methods of using them for the prevention, suppression, treatment and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. |
