abstract A process for preparing a hydrophilic water insoluble acrylic polymer by heating a composition consisting essentially of a compound having the generic formula ##STR1## wherein --R 1 is --H, --CH 3 , or --CH 2 CH 3 and --R 2 is a lower alkyl radical containing at least one hydroxy group, said composition being essentially free from polymerization catalysts and initiators; the polymer resulting from the process and articles including contact lens blanks and contact lenses manufactured from the polymer.
