abstract This invention provides a process for producing tetrahydrofuran by (1) the condensation of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol with acrolein to form 2-vinyl-5-methyl-1,3-dioxane; (2) the conversion of the 2-vinyl-5-methyl-1,3-dioxane under hydroformylation conditions to 3-(5'-methyl-1',3'-dioxane)propionaldehyde; and (3) hydrogenation of the propionaldehyde derivative under acidic conditions to yield tetrahydrofuran.
