abstract A portion of a recycle stream obtained as a result of the oxidation of an aryl tertiary alkane and containing aralkyl tertiary monohydroperoxide, substantial amounts of unreacted aryl tertiary alkane and lesser amounts of poly-oxy-functional oxidation by-products is subjected to aqueous alkaline extraction to remove at least a portion of the poly-oxy-functional oxidation by-products therefrom followed by separation of the extraction mixture into an aqueous alkaline phase and an organic phase, the organic phase being recycled to the oxidation reaction.
