Vanadium organophosphates represented by the formula: and polymers thereof represented by the formula: WHEREIN X IS 2 TO 6, R is an alkyl or an alkyl ether having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl having up to 16 atoms, or mixtures thereof, CAN BE PREPARED BY A REACTION BETWEEN A VANADIUM OXIDE, OXYHALIDE, OR HALIDE OR AN ALKYL VANADATE AND A TRIALKYL, TRIALKYL ETHER OR A TRIARYL PHOSPHATE. A mixture of the vanadium organophosphate and an organoaluminum halide forms an active vanadium coordination catalyst. This catalyst is especially useful in the production of ''''EP'''' and ''''EPDM'''' rubber. A particularly effective vanadium coordination catalyst comprises vanadium (IV) oxybis (diethyl phosphate) and an organoaluminum chloride. |
