abstract Processes for producing substituted or unsubstituted 3-thia furans and 3-furan thiols comprising the steps of: I. Providing a 2-ene-1,4 dione having the structure: II. Intimately admixing said 2-ene-1,4 dione with a thiol having the formula R3SH thereby providing a substituted or unsubstituted 2-thia substituted 1,4 dione having the structure: III. Cyclizing said 2-thia substituted 1,4 dione to form a substituted or unsubstituted 3-thia furan having the formula: IV. Optionally but only when R3 hydrolyzing is acyl or aroyl, said 3-thia furan thereby forming a 3-mercapto furan having the structure: V. Optionally, reacting said 3-mercapto furan with an acyl halide thereby forming a 3-thia furan having the formula: WHEREIN R1 and R2 are the same or different lower alkyl; wherein R3 is either acyl, aroyl, or alkyl; wherein R4 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; and wherein R5 is different from R3 and is either acyl or aroyl. If either of R1 or R2 are hydrogen, then step (ii) is performed in the presence of an organic base such as piperidine, pyridine, triethyl amine, quinoline, or Alpha picoline.
