abstract Quinoxaline is prepared in high purity and yield by condensing at least 6% by weight of glyoxal with at least 11% by weight of o-phenylenediamine in aqueous solution in the presence of alkali metal salts of weak acids. A crude solution of glyoxal containing weak acids formed during the preparation of glyoxal by oxidation of paraldehyde or acetaldehyde with nitric acid is the preferred starting material.
