abstract A process for preparing novel cationic flocculating agents and paper wet-end additives is disclosed wherein water-dispersible polysaccharides, colloidally dispersed in an aqueous alkaline medium are reacted with polyfunctional derivatizing reagents containing cationic groups. The resulting dispersion of derivatized polysaccharide may be used directly without further purification, e.g., as an additive for paper pulp which improves retention of pigment and paper strength.
