abstract An alkali metal salt of sulfated cellulose which has a degree of substitution of 0.3 - 2.5 and a viscosity as a 0.5% aqueous solution at 25*C as measured by a BL viscometer at 30 rpm greater than 100 cps is prepared by reacting wood pulp with a pyridinesulfuric anhydride complex and neutralizing the resulting product with an alkaline compound.
