abstract This invention provides an improvement in the process of obtaining metal values from manganiferous iron-containing ore by halidating the ores and separating the metal values from the ore as the halides. This improvement comprises segregating the iron halide from the mixed halides and recycling the iron halide to react with the ore prior to halidating. This process is especially applicable to ocean floor nodule ores and utilizes preferably hydrogen halides or halogens as the halidating agents, in aqueous solutions.
