abstract A process is disclosed for coating the surface of a shaped article of epoxy resin or polyphenylene oxide resin with a metal by treating the surface of the article with a compound having the formula RO(AO)nR'' wherein one of R and R'' is an alkyl or acyl group having not more than four carbon atoms and the other of R and R'' is hydrogen atom or an alkyl or acyl group having not more than four carbon atoms, A is a straight or branched C2 to C4 alkylene group, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, further treating the surface with a conventional chemical etchant, and thereafter coating the treated surface of the shaped article with metal. The process provides a strongly adhering metal coating.
