titleOfInvention Pipeline condition analyzer
abstract A pipeline condition analyzer includes pigging apparatus which can be accommodated to different diameter pipelines. A pressure transducer on board the pig monitors the changes in the pressure of a pipeline segment isolated by the pig due to pipeline characteristics and leaks in the pipeline. This information is recorded on tape as an FM signal by an onboard recorder. A radiation source on board the pig directs a beam of radiation toward the wall of pipe where it undergoes Compton scattering. A detector is positioned to intercept the back-scattered radiation which varies in accordance with the wall thickness. The output of the detector reflecting changes in wall thickness due to pipeline characteristics and corrosion is recorded as a second FM signal on the tape. After the pig traverses the pipeline, the tape is removed and the signals thereon processed to display an accurate pressure profile and wall thickness profile of the pipeline. The system includes an automatic threshold and alarm capability so that one need scrutinize only signals which are characteristic of leaks or incipient leaks.
