abstract A lubricating oil additive having an alkali value above 400 is made by reacting an oxide of a metal of Group II with methanol and carbon dioxide and emulsifying with an oil soluble sulfonate in a succession of stages, the resulting carbonate dispersion being stabilized by treating with water, then dehydrating after each stage.
