abstract Polyhaloaralkyl (halosulfonyl) sulfooxonium inner salts are prepared by the reaction of benzal halides with sulfur trioxide. The oxonium salts are readily hydrolyzed to afford aldehydes useful in the production of flame retardant polymers. The aldehyde products of oxonium salt hydrolysis may be oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acid derivatives which are useful pesticides.
