titleOfInvention Production of edible protein from non-toxic strains of penicillium
abstract Penicillin free edible protein-containing substance suitable for human consumption is produced by incubating and proliferating, under aerobic conditions, a non-toxic and non-penicillin producing strain of Penicillium notatum or Penicillium chrysogenum or a variant or mutant thereof in a culture medium containing essential growth-promoting nutrient substances, of which carbon in the form of assimilable carbohydrate constitutes the limiting substrate in proliferation, and separating from the assimilable carbohydrate exhausted medium the proliferated organism which is penicillin free and which constitutes the edible protein-containing substance suitable for human consumption possessing a high net protein utilization value of at least 70 based on alpha-amino nitrogen.
