abstract A nitrogen gas generating composition which upon combustion generates relatively low temperature non-toxic and odorless gases and low yield substantially non-corrosive and odorless solid decomposition products is achieved by using an alkali metal azide as the source of nitrogen gas and anhydrous chromic chloride as an oxidizer for the azide. In a preferred embodiment, the gas generating composition also contains aluminum oxide as an inert heat sink which cools the generated gases. The gas generating compositions of this invention are especially useful for inflating passgener vehicle protective crash bags.
