abstract A process for generation of chlorine dioxide and chlorine is disclosed in which anhydrous sodium sulphate is produced as a byproduct. Sodium chlorate, sodium chloride and sulphuric acid are charged in suitable proportions with the acidity maintained between about 1.0 and 2.4 molar. The temperature of the reaction solution is maintained between about 30*C and the temperature above which substantial decomposition of chlorine dioxide would occur. Chlorine dioxide and chlorine are withdrawn and the reaction liquor is evaporated to crystallize sodium sulphate which is recovered.
