abstract A vertical axis washing machine having a washing receptacle and drive means supported by three suspension element assemblies. Due to vertical movement of the suspension assemblies with the addition or removal of washing liquid from the washing receptacle, the suspension element assemblies provide a damped spring system during the washing cycle and an undamped spring system during the extraction cycle. A vertical attitude of the washing receptacle is attained by providing the suspension element assemblies with differing spring rates by varying the number of free coils of a spring in each of the suspension element assemblies.
