titleOfInvention Apparatus for controlling an inflatable safety device
abstract Apparatus for controlling an inflatable safety device for restaining an occupant of a motor vehicle during a crash. The preferred form includes electrically acuated means for causing the inflation of the inflatable safety device, first and second acceleration-responsive switches positioned on the vehicle''s radiator or its support structure, a third accelerationresponsive switch positioned in the vehicle''s passenger compartment, and a thermal cut-off device for disconnecting the inflation control apparatus from the vehicle''s source of electrical energy if either of the first or second accelerationresponsive switches is closed for a predetermined length of time. The third switch is responsive to acceleration impulses of predetermined magnitudes and durations less than those to which the first and second switches are responsive. The thermal cut-off device includes a fusible element and has a resistance wire coiled around it to melt the fusible element. The accelerationresponsive switches are of the roller-band type.
