abstract | There are disclosed new catalysts for the polymerization of olefins and which comprise the products of reaction between organometallic compounds or hydrides of metals of Groups I, II or III of the Mendelyeev Periodic Table and the product obtained by reacting a liquid halogenated compound of titanium or vanadium with a solid carrier containing chemically uncombined water and having the formula Mg O. (Mg(OH)2)x. (H2O)y, WHEREIN X IS A NUMBER GREATER THAN O and may be 100 or higher; y is a number between 0 and 1; (Mg(OH)2)x expresses the number of hydroxyls present in the carrier, however combined; and (H2O)y represents the number of chemically uncombined molecules of water present in the carrier. The catalysts are very active and use thereof in the polymerization of olefins results in high yields of polymers having a low content of foreign substances. |
