titleOfInvention | Polyester resin composition and method of making the same |
abstract | This disclosure relates to a moldable polyester composition and to a process for making the same. The process comprises mixing a filler with a polyester by subjecting the polyester to high shear rates as the filler is added thereto until a sharp decrease in viscosity is observed. The filler blending step is characterized by a temperature above room temperature and less than 120*F. A vinylidene-containing monomer copolymerizable with the polyester, a catalyst and a fibrous reinforcing material is added to the polyester resin after the filler mixing step and while the mixture is at an elevated temperature. The fibrous reinforcing material is quickly blended into the mixture in a time insufficient to destroy the integrity of the strand structure and so that the mixture maintains its low viscosity. The polyester composition, thus compounded, can be cured in suitable mold cavities to make articles which simulate natural materials and have exceptionally high surface reproduction fidelity. The products produced have the appearance, feel and sound of wood. |
